Can a 100-Amp Panel Support a Level 2 Charger?
Sometimes, but not always. A 100-amp service can support a Level 2 EV charger only when the home’s existing load leaves enough spare capacity, confirmed by a load calculation. Many older homes on 100-amp service are already near their limit and need a 200-amp upgrade or a load-management device before a charger can be added safely.
Adding a home EV charger is the most frequent reason homeowners request a panel evaluation. A Level 2 charger draws a substantial, continuous load, and code requires a load calculation to confirm the service can support it alongside everything else in the home. Where capacity is tight, the options include a service-capacity evaluation, a panel replacement, added circuit capacity, or a load-management device that lets the charger share capacity safely. To charge at home, request an EV charger installation and the electrician can assess the panel at the same time.
